BREAKING NEWS: President Tinubu Grants Pardon to Maryam Sanda, Sentenced to Death in 2020

Reports have emerged that Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death in 2020 for the culpable homicide of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, has been granted a presidential pardon by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.


Sanda, who had spent six years and eight months at the Suleja Medium Security Custodial Centre, was said to have been considered for clemency following an appeal from her family.


According to multiple reports, her family pleaded for her release, emphasizing that her freedom would have a positive impact on her two children, who have been under the care of relatives since her incarceration.


Their appeal was reportedly supported by evidence of her exemplary conduct in custody, her remorse for the crime, and her commitment to personal reform and spiritual renewal.


While official confirmation from the presidency or the Ministry of Justice is still being awaited at the time of this report, news of the pardon has generated mixed reactions across social media and legal circles, with many Nigerians debating the decision’s moral and legal implications.


Maryam Sanda’s case drew national attention in 2017 after the death of her husband, the late Bilyaminu Bello, who was a nephew to a former PDP chairman, Haliru Bello. The high-profile trial and eventual conviction became one of Nigeria’s most widely followed homicide cases in recent years.
