Nigeria’s fashion matriarch and society icon, Hajia Zainab Abah Folawiyo, has been thrown into deep mourning following the death of her only child, Olusegun Awolowo Jr., aged 62.

Sisi Abah, now 82, has long been admired for her elegance, philanthropy and strong presence in the social and cultural landscape of Nigeria. The loss of her only son has devastated friends and admirers who recall the unusually close bond between mother and child. Segun Jr. was often described as her “greatest blessing,” and she dedicated much of her life to raising and supporting him.

Olusegun Awolowo Jr., a lawyer and former Executive Director and CEO of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), was widely respected for his intellect, calm nature and contributions to national development. As a grandson of the late nationalist and statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo, he carried a legacy of public service and lived a life marked by humility and commitment to the country.

His father, Segun Awolowo Sr., died tragically in a car crash in 1963 — just two months before Segun Jr. was born. Segun Sr., a promising legal mind and alumnus of Igbobi College, was highly regarded before his untimely passing, making Segun Jr.’s birth a deeply emotional moment for the Awolowo family.

Tributes have continued to pour in from dignitaries, associates, and members of the public who admired Segun Jr.’s character and service. Many have also extended sympathy to Sisi Abah, acknowledging the depth of her grief as a mother who poured her heart, strength, and devotion into raising her only child.

As Nigeria mourns the passing of a notable public figure, many hearts are with a mother navigating the painful reality of life without the son she cherished so dearly.

May his soul rest in perfect peace.
